About Play Like A Girl
As a lifelong athlete and a mom of three girls, I am a huge advocate for getting girls started in sports. I honestly attribute my success as a designer and entrepreneur to participating in sports from elementary school to Division I field hockey in college (Go Eagles!). ?
I’ve actually done extensive research of my own on the subject of girls in sports. Did you know that girls who participate in sports:
• experience higher than average levels of self-esteem and less depression
• are more likely to experience academic success than those who do not participate in sports
• are less likely to use illicit drugs and become pregnant
• are more content with their lives
• have a more harmonious and cohesive relationship with parents
Now that I’ve bored you with the particulars, I will tell you that I was thrilled to be offered an opportunity to work with Play Like A Girl. Its mission is “to ensure that every girl reaches her full potential by providing girls ages 9–13 an opportunity—and in many cases, their only chance—to participate in sport and physical activity.” What a great cause and what a perfect project!

Branding and Design
I’m so thrilled to unveil the branding and design for the Play Like A Girl Honors gala—a fun, entertaining event that honors the achievements of top female athletes and of amazing leaders in sports and helps raise funds to further its mission.
Because Play Like A Girl had just recently gone through its own rebrand, I designed a simple logo that incorporates the master mark and can be used for years to come.

When designing the invitation, I wanted it to have a sense of movement and a celebratory feel, so I created what I call a “champagne and stars” design, complete with bubbles and swirling lines. Play Like A Girl’s CEO, Dr. Kimberly Clay, loves the combination of navy and gold—a color palette I was happy to deliver. The invitation is two color—one dark blue Pantone ink and a metallic gold Pantone ink. Metallic ink has tiny pieces of metal in it which gives it a subtle and elegant sheen.

I designed several other deliverables to get gala attendees excited for the event, including a flyer, social media posts and a branded email, all of which helped drive ticket sales. I enjoyed curating one fun social media post—a shopping guide to black tie optional attire.

Finally, the day of designs included bidder cards, table numbers, directional signage, check-in signage and bidding app instructions.
