FNIH Futures Fund

Transforming Lives with Breakthrough Solutions

The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health’s Futures Fund

For over a century, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has led the world as the largest biomedical research agency and global funder of research. Every day it spearheads groundbreaking discoveries that save lives. At the same time, it ensures a high return on public investment by promoting economic growth and protecting our nation’s health.

In more than 20 years of service, the Foundation has raised $1 billion+ to support more than 600 research programs. Its transformative public-private partnerships align world-class scientists, critical datasets and the latest technology to move the needle on intractable health problems. Together, we gain maximum impact that exceeds what any organization or individual can achieve alone, making important discoveries that improve health around the world.

Virtually all the money FNIH raises is restricted to specific projects. There is no flexibility to seed new discoveries or respond to epidemics and no endowment to ensure the continuity of work. During health crises, flexibility is more important than ever as the NIH leans on the Foundation to quickly provide support.

To address the critical need for flexibility, sustainability and innovation, the FNIH Board of Directors created the Futures Fund in 2018. The goal is to raise $10 million for this endowment by the Foundation’s 25th anniversary in 2021. This endowment marks a turning-point in the FNIH history, enabling it to move to the next level and ensuring its legacy.

As the FNIH embarks on this journey to advance life-saving research, the Foundation seeks Founding Investors who believe in the transformative partnership of the FNIH and the NIH. Please join us with multi-year pledges, bequests and outright gifts.

Through your support, you are driving the innovation that creates a brighter future for health.

Thank you!

FNIH by the Numbers*

  • $1 billion+ raised to date
  • 86¢ of every dollar funds programs
  • 600+ programs supported since 1996
  • 123 current research partnerships, scientific education/training, conferences/events, capital programs
  • 6 years of outstanding Charity Navigator ratings

Together, we can fund the research that shapes the future of health

  • Futures Fund donors will be recognized for their important investment in biomedical research and discovery.
  • We intend to raise $10 million by 2021, and are committed to continue raising support for the endowment after meeting this goal.
  • The endowment principal will be appropriately invested in perpetuity. The FNIH Board of Directors will use the investment income to fund projects and support the Foundation.
