My family needed a gentle reminded of our values and rules to follow on a daily basis. So I created this simple-to-do chalkboard Family Rules wall hanging. If you want to make your own, follow the steps below.
What you need:
- 11 x 14″ canvas
- chalkboard paint
- white acrylic paint
- paint brush
- 12 x 12″ adhesive-backed vinyl
- Silhouette Cameo or Cricut cutting machine
- weeding tool
- adhesive-backed transfer paper
- Exacto knife

Create your own artwork or download my design and upload it to your cutting machine software

Step 1
Using chalkboard paint (I used Rustoleum’s), paint the canvas with two coats and let dry.

Step 2
While the canvas dries, upload a JPEG to the design software you use for your cutting machine. Trace and cut out of a 12 x 12″ sheet of vinyl.

Step 3
Weed your vinyl by taking out the letters leaving the holes and cover the design in adhesive-backed transfer paper.

Step 4
Carefully peel back the vinyl backing from the design.

Step 5
Place vinyl on canvas and press the vinyl down into the canvas using your finger or a flat edge. Then carefully peel back the transfer paper.

Step 6
Using the white acrylic paint, cover the holes of the vinyl and make sure to get in the crevices.

Step 7
Carefully peel back the vinyl. (Don’t worry if you have a few paint smudges–you can scrape them off with an exacto knife when it dries.) Using an Exacto knife, pry up the small pieces of vinyl that are left in the center of the letters.

Step 8
Allow the acrylic paint to dry. At this point, if you’re anal like me, you can use that Exacto knife to scrape any white acrylic paint that went awry. Don’t scrape too hard because you’ll remove the chalkboard paint layer.
And here is the finished product!

Now you’re ready to hang your Family Rules!
If you make your own, shoot me a message or tag me in your post. I’d love to see how it turned out!
