Maryann commissioned me to create a surprise birthday party invitation for her husband who was turning 40. She didn’t give me too much to go on, except that “he loves a good party and he loves Stoli dolis which are a pineapple vodka drink served in a martini glass.”

I noodled on this one for a while and then I thought, What better way to invite guests and get them excited for a night of celebrating and drinking than with a coaster invitation?! I wanted the coaster to be both whimsical and sophisticated, so I paired quirky fonts with black foil for a slick, even impression.

To add a pop of color, I had the edges painted with a bright hot red. To drive home that the party was a surprise, I concluded the copy with a little poem—“Keep this coaster from Nick’s curious eyes by parking your drink here because it’s a surprise.”

The coasters were shipped in square envelopes. I love a wrap around design and just had to incorporate it into the envelope as well. I lined them with custom envelope liners and taped down the flaps with custom cocktail tape. I hand addressed the envelopes to match the coaster typography.
